- Beat Research with DJ/Rupture
-
DJ/RuptureKnown to live and DJ in Boston in the late nineties, DJ Rupture returns as the most “agile and reckless” musician functioning in our times. Indeed, though DJ Rupture cites influences both musical and literary, a list of them would give little indication of what his tracks actually sound like. The Brooklynite’s breakout mix, 2001’s Gold Teeth Thief was made on what would become known in dozens of countries as his standard set-up, three turntables playing everything from acapella to ambient.

Cloud City with MachineDrum Travis Stewart (aka MachineDrum) has gone from making everything from “bugged-out R&B and pop you can listen to while on psychadelics” to “harsh noise and atonal soundscapes.” His seventh and most recent release “Want to 1 2?” came out less than a year ago and since then Stewart has been working relentlessly on new tracks and DJ mixes to showcase his wide ranging sound. In addition to making his own tracks under the MachineDrum moniker, he’s collaborated with MCs such as Yo Majesty, Mickey Factz, and most recently Theophilus London.Joining him is a DJ set from the Death Star DJs, a local DJ team that has a posse. - Ceremony with DJs Chris Ewen and Mothra
DJ Chris EwenDJ Chris Ewen
Named “Best Alternative DJ in New England” more than once, Chris Ewen began his career in his home-city of Detroit, where he became a fairly well-known underground DJ in the 80s at Todd’s & The Asylum. He also joined the electronic rock band Figures on a Beach, which built a strong following playing punk clubs and art galleries with a mix (rare for Detroit at the time) containing more synthesizers than guitars, and more make-up than was strictly necessary. After opening for OMD, The B-52s, ABC, Adam & the Ants, Ultravox, and Bauhaus, among others, Ewen moved with his band to Boston in 1985, signed with Sire records, recorded 2 albums and landed a video on MTV. The band broke up in the early nineties (in the midst of the Nirvana-inspired grunge takeover of the music industry), but Ewen continued to DJ and make music, landing gigs at the now legendary clubs Ground Zero and ManRay, where he saturated a scene with the experimental goth, industrial, electronic and punk tracks that it craved. He continues to record electro-pop music with his bands Future Bible Heroes (with Stephin Merritt and Claudia Gonson of The Magnetic Fields) and The Hidden Variable (with lyricists Neil Gaiman, Peter Straub, Poppy Z. Brite, Caitlin R. Kiernan, & Charles de Lint, among others – and vocals by Cosey Fanni Tutti of Throbbing Gristle, Claudia Gonson & Malena) and DJs at his 80’s electro night “Heroes” and his goth + industrial night Xmortis, both at T.T. The Bear’s in Cambridge, across the street from ManRay’s former location.

AC Slater AC SLATER, member of TROUBLE & BASS and all around rad dude, has stared his own digital record label. It’s called PARTY LIKE US. Here’s what it says in their press release:”We are proud to announce the launch of Party Like Us Records, based out of the United States in Brooklyn, NY. Party Like Us Records is a digital label that features releases from AC Slater, Udachi, and B. Rich as well as remixes by our like minded producer friends from around the world. The mission with Party Like Us is to release dancefloor friendly tracks that incorporate all kinds of classic dance music elements with a creative and original edge. Basically, we like heavy bass that pounds and drives the dancefloor. We are distributed by Seed Distribution based out of Brooklyn, NY.”
UdachiBorn in the Ukraine (and, by some accounts, raised in Shaolin), Staten Island’s Udachi is gaining a well-deserved place in his city’s Bass movement. Sounding something like a space ship on drugs come to life for one night only, he has been playing raves for 8 years, incorporating his admitted love of “dance music in all forms, mainly cheese” into what has been called an “insane blend of stomping bass, cheesy pop vocals, bassline-esc bouncy rhythm, wobble, and even trance power synths.” His fame may be said to have begun years ago with a Panacea remix, but a more relevant place to begin might be his Paypur E.P., Jack got Jacked, or his most recent release JellyRoll, out on Trouble and Bass Recordings. Not long ago, Udachi began the label Party Like Us Records with Boston’s B Rich, and he works sporadically with AC Slater on a side project called “Boltan”

Phantogram Saratoga Springs’ Sarah D. Barthel and Joshua M. Carter are Phantogram.Their debut album, Eyelid Movies, is slated for release on February 9 of this year, though you can, as usual, Myspace some of it. Though they describe their music as “a mix of organic and electronic sounds, with swirling guitar, spaced-out synths, and chopped up samples and rhythms”, what emerges is a surprisingly coherent and crisped reinvention of elements that are vaguely familiar to anyone listening (Air and Snow Patrol have been cited, among othrers). Regardless of their roots, Phantogram seem to have the important ability to cause a live audience to dance. Whether the mad sampling and innovation amount to mere parts of a whole or something more can be determined live on the 9th.

Kingdom Brooklyn-based DJ and producer Kingdom began his ascent to fame in 2006, when he dropped his first mixtape featuring his club, garage, and R&B focus. Recently signed to Fools Gold Records, Kingdom has been reviewed favorably and liberally, is a favorite on Dicobelle magazine’s track lists, and his tracks have been played by Diplo, among others. A staple at the new Club Vortex in Brooklyn, he is currently touring the country with his second mixtape out. Already a “vanguard of tropical blends, Latin stylings and bass-heavy, dance-savvy sounds from around the world”, Kingdom mixes across many genres, without losing his R&B focus and overtones.

Like A-Trak, he was born to mix records and, with the new breed of electro and hip-hop, he took his mixing to the next level, keeping dancefloors in a state of madness. Now in L.A., Klever’s brought his new sound to Sweden, Japan and beyond.

- Midweek Techno with Justin Martin
JUSTIN MARTIN San Francisco native Justin Martin spins house, techno, hyphy and tropical beats with an oft-cited “melodic toughness”. In fact, his early years were spent playing saxophone and classical piano, and he has been a member of both a jazz/combo funk group and a Brazilian hiphop group. This musicality shows through in his productions, which garnered him success from the very first release, The Sad Piano in 2003. Mentored by Claude Vonstroke before co-founding Dirtybird Records and releasing his own compilations, Justin Martin now has an entire “Chaos Restored” mix series out on Buzzin’ Fly, hosts his monthly Dirtybird parties in San Francisco, is booked for months from Belgrade to Barcelona, and is still “always trying to find music for my DJ sets that rattles sound systems, but still has enough melody and interesting texture to expand your mind even if you’re sitting at home on a snowy or rainy day.”

- Together Presents: Das Racist
Das RacistThis Brooklyn duo, composed of Queens-born Himanshu Suri and San Francisco’s Victor Vazquez, rap with what they describe as a “deconstructionalist” approach to music, an irreverence of word and sound which often has polarizing effects on the audience. Though their album Shut Up, Dude is not widely available yet, they have already caused plenty of buzz with their single “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell”, which brought about not only fame, remixes, and reviews of their uncanny ability to make the consumer dance to his own shame, but a full-fledged cartoon-off with Farley Katz of The New Yorker. Playboy has described them as “equal parts hip-hop and Cheech & Chong”, but their unflagging raps and and bouncy backbeats do have a tendency to leave you wondering just how tongue-in-cheeck they are. The one thing you cannot do is not have an opinion.

- Taliesin at Enormous Room

Taliesin at Enormous Room Heavyweight operator and low-end theorist Taliesin hunts beats and bass across genres and eras – a scientist’s attention for detail and a painterly view towards the decks puts Taliesin at the forefront of a new generation of DJs raised in an era of unparalleled media saturation. Taliesin’s tropical stylings have recently brought him solo through the UK and Europe. With a steady stream of fuck-genre mixes and a release of original material slated for a Spring 2010 release, Taliesin is going in hard.
Recently, Taliesin has teamed up with video artist Nes.Avi to deliver a peerless live A/V performance. They bring a lush and devastating combination of sonics and visuals: utilizing turntables, sampler, and effects and a multichannel video mixer- often combining ripped youtube footage, dvds, vhs, nintendo and any other video content they can find in their explorations of the internet and the countries thrift shops and garage sales.
Kat Fyte, aka Max Pearl, is a young, trans-metropolitan, genre-bending ‘ardcore stepper straight out of Boston. His sets are eclectic yet coherent, with an emphasis on big bass and fast, energetic vocals. A given set can take an audience from rap and reggae dancehall, through to smart techno, brash electro, and rollin’ dubstep without showing any seams. He resents genre orthodoxy and is constantly on the lookout for mutations and evolutions in contemporary beat-craft. Air horns, dramatic rewinds, and tight mixes abound as he mashes up 90’s R&B sing-a-longs with rare gems and exclusive releases.

- Together Presents Sinden with Shuttle
Sinden Sinden has been behind some of the most familiar and infectious party songs over the past several years. Although he has a small list of his own releases on the likes of Mad Decent, Made to Play Recordings and Atlantic Jaxx, he is particularly talented in his remix work. With a keen ear to a vocal or hook he thinks is killer, Sinden always comes correct by making it even more memorable by slapping some complimentary funky break loops and a bassline beneath it.
Shuttle
Shuttle is the name of Nate Donmoyer’s electronic project and has been bubbling around New England for some time. He got a bit side-tracked when the band he was playing drums in, Passion Pit, became the biggest band in the world. Currently on tour with the juggernaut, he comes home just in time to support Sinden, who it so happens was one of his earliest supporters via his radio show.

Staccato
Stacatto was born in part in Boston, when WERS DJ Gina Turner was turned on to the new sounds coming out of club-land. Electro, techno and minimal, but played to in a massive, big room style.
Tuner then found a partner in LOUISAHHH!!!. In L.A., the duo made huge waves witht heir party movement: MAJOR.

Wolfgang GartnerWolfgang Gartner has been producing house music since the ripe age of 11. With extensive training in classical and jazz piano, he had a strong foundation to start from. He first made a name for himself in the gangsta rap scene as MC Wolf & the Gang, where he gained a cult following for his tracks that incorporated his singular brands of both parlance and rhyme. West Coast, Straight Thuggin Records and numerous Dirty South allegiances followed, but somewhere along the way, the love between Straight Thuggin and Gartner was lost. Reaching out to the dance community to reinvent his image, Gartner found himself once again part of a new era of music. He established himself producing deep house (under his real name, Joey Youngman) until 2007, when he officially embraced a new creative identity as Wolfgang Gartner and begin to produce electro house, tech house, and techno. -
Yes Giantess Jan Rosenfeld (vocals/ synth), Chase Nicholl (synth), Karl Hohn (synth) and Joey Sulkowski (drums) are Boston’s Yes, Giantess. Citing late 80s and early 90s pop music as some of their influences, they have nevertheless been most often compared to contemporary acts such as Ratatat, Passion Pit, and even “Daft Punk on a sugar rush”. Produced by Passion Pit’s own Ayad Al-Adhamy at his Bo Flex Music studio, the pop group has gained attention by opening for Little Boots on tour.

Body Language
Brooklyn-based collective Body Language have come a long way from throwing weekly parties in a Hartford dive bar. In just over a year as a band, they have gained attention for their self-described mix of “Detroit techno, Chigaco house, and indie dance”. Driven by subdued, but perky, beats, repeated lyrics, and sometimes persistent non-verbal sounds that nevertheless sound like singing, they shape an electronic dance groove that is sometimes laid-back and sometimes simply joyous. While they continue to give credibility to their name with the instinctual kinetics they produce in an audience, they are also awaiting a remix edition of their E.P. (coming soon), and they are producing an album for artist Niia, who has been heard on previous Wyclef Jean tracks.

Lee Burridge Lee Burridge, of Hampshire, UK, is an internationally recognized DJ, producer and record label owner who discovered early on both aid house and the potential to bring the club scene to faraway lands. Burridge was a member of England’s Tyrant Soundsystem (along with DJs Craig Richards and Sasha) and has mixed albums for labels such as Global Underground, Hooj Choons and Balance. Burridge helped launch the underground club scene in Hong Kong during the early 1990s, gaining multiple residencies before turning his attentions in 1993 to the now legendary full moon parties at Ko Pha Ngan, Thailand, where his residency at the back-yard club provided an inspirational alternative to the more standard nights around. Renowned for his DJ sets that mix together varieties of electronic dance music into the early hours of the morning, as well as for his antics behind the turntables in the DJ booth, he now plays around the world.
Joining Burridge are two strong local dance music talents: Eli Wilkie and Patrick Barry. Eli and Steve Porter’s “Daniel Wiggy” was featured on Lee Burridge’s own “24/7″ compilation, while Patrick Barry is a resident DJ at Rise and played in 2009 with the likes of Chloe Harris and Clive Henry. - Together & DJDeals.com Present: Dirtybird Records

WorthySan Francisco’s techno/hyphy/house DJ Worthy spins techno, hyphy and house influenced by good house music, funk, breakbeats, 80’s metal, and 80’s new wave. Worthy met Justin Martin in the late nineties, after moving to NYC, where artists LTJ Bukem, Stacey Pullen and Sasha and the expanding dance music scene encouraged him to play records of all genres from hip hop to breaks to techno and drum ‘n’ bass. In 2001, he moved to San Francisco and began to DJ around the city, as well as produce house and techno which would soon be played at the now staple of San Francisco’s party scene, the outdoor Dirtybird parties, co-founded by Worthy, Christian Martin, Justin Martin and Claude VonStroke. In 2006, Worthy launched his label, Anabatic Records, which has already released noteworthy tech house. Still a Dirtybird regular, he has also been showcasing his talent as a producer with E.P. releases on Anabatic and Dirtybird, as well as 2008’s underground hit “Work The Walls”, with accompanying video.
Christian Martin
Christian Martin’s love affair with electronic music began in 1995, as an early attendee at Southern California’s now legendary Moontribe full moon desert parties. After absorbing late 90’s club life in New York, London, and Los Angeles, Christian settled in San Francisco in the spring of 2000. He started playing records in 2002 under the tutelage of his brother, Justin Martin, armed with a stack of Justin’s old vinyl and used Technics 1200’s from Sammy D.In 2003, inspired by the massive desert soundsystems of old, Christian founded the dirtybird soundsystem. Along with co-founders Justin Martin, Worthy, and Claude VonStroke, dirtybird’s Sunday afternoon BBQ’s have quickly become a Golden Gate Park institution.Along with Christian’s residency at dirtybird’s monthly club night, he’s been busy in the studio, polishing multiple remixes and originals. 2010 looks to be busier than ever for Christian as he helps shape the future of dirtybird’s unique sound.

Voodeux
Described as ‘Halloween on wax’ Voodeux is the human manifestation of creepy house and techno. James Watts (AKA KiloWatts) and Tanner Ross have been collaborating for 6 years, but they officially became Voodeux their 2008 The Curse E.P., which prompted Claude VonStroke to encourage them to make an album that followed along the same creepy vein. Ross’s music synthesis degree from Berklee and Watts’ varied discography as a producer lend themselves perfectly to the dark magic theme, producing a mix that tells “a chilling tale of eerie house and minimal techno that will haunt you long after you’ve left the club.”

Brian Kane
BRIAN KANE is a living legend in the video performance / art world. His work inspired generations of followers and imitators. Yet he doesn’t stop to rest on his laurels. Today, he’s as busy as ever, converting dreams into reality. His use of modern technology to create art is often funny and unexpected. In 1991, Brian was a founding member of the groundbreaking multimedia group Emergency Broadcast Network (EBN), in which he pioneered the art and technology of video sampling. And in 1992, Brian invented VuJak, the worlds first video sampler. From 1988 through 1996, Brian created many milestone’s in the development of commercial holography, including the first commercial computer generated hologram in 1988, and the first full-parallax strereographic hologram in 1996.
Zebbler Encanti ExperienceZEBBLER ENCANTI EXPERIENCE is a live audio/video performance duo, which often involves 3 projector wide visuals and synchronized surround sound a/v.
The two are a custom content factory, churning out endless all original sounds and visuals without stopping to catch their breath. Zebbler is the video arm of Z.E.E., perhaps most well known for the Boston Mooninite Debacle in which l.e.d. advertisements he placed around the city for an Adult Swim cartoon in Boston were mistaken for bombs and caused a massive panic.
Moving beyond that, Zebbler is a decorated artist, having won “Best Visual Artist” in the Boston Phoenix reader poll, and a number 12 slot in DJ Magazine’s best VJ in the World

DJ Funk One of the few figureheads in the “Ghetto House” genre, Chicago’s DJ Funk grew up on the musically rich West Side of Chicago, where he was exposed at an early age to Chicago, New York & Detroit dance music. Developing from his early influences he started DJing out when he was just a teenager at house parties, school dances, and neighborhood clubs; selling mix tapes in the hood with his former crew “do or die” to make ends meet. Some of his early influences were Grand Master Flash, African Bambada, and Farley Jack Master Funk, and Hip-Hop as a whole, which he helped inject into the chicago club scene early on. Mixing House, Techno and Hip-Hop, DJ Funk pioneered the “Ghetto House” sound. A professional DJ for over a decade, DJ Funk has produced anthem after anthem of bouncing “Ass & Titty” Dance Music for his very own record company Dance Mania Records, while his remix resumé includes such greats as Basement Jaxx, Justice, DJ Sneak, and Fast Eddie.True Productions

NICOLAS JAAR
Nicolas Jaar was born in NY but quickly relocated to Santiago de Chile in the 90’s, only to come back to his birth place as a teenager. Haunted by Mulatu Astatke and Erik Satie, Nico started to make organic electronic music in 2004 at the age of 14. At 17, he made his debut with “The Student EP” on Wolf and Lamb Music with a remix by Seth Troxler who called him ” one of the most talented minds dance music is about to see develop”.

Damian Lazarus
Begining with mainly hip-hop, electro, soul and funk roots, London’s Damian Lazarus added house, hardcore and jungle to his repertoire while in college. His first real DJing break was the 2002 City Rockers party, followed by residency at Bodyrockers and an invitation to play at the Sonar festival. With frequent releases on Crosstown Rebels and DJ gigs all around the globe, his sound has morphed into what he describes as “twisted, raw, deep underground techno, house and electro. Crazy future music that works just as well at peak times in large clubs as it does in the early hours in small spaces.” Luckily, RISE is one of those clubs where this sort of thing goes over perfectly. Come celebrate with us at the Together 2010 closing party!
